The nowloon afïair has received conspicuous and of course partisan treatment in the local press, with emphasis on "imperialism”, “o'uelty" and "sovereign rights'. typical editorial, from the "Liang ang . BU of January 18th, is attached, in translation. News releases from Canton reported the reactions and resolutions of the students there. The destruction of british property on : hameen shortly afterwarus received only routine reporting here the following day. All remained quiet in .moy, however, demonstration being confined to scribblings on tar Consulate-Ceneral gates and the nearby walls, "eturn long rong and Lowloon", appearing on the night of January 18 19. The following day, in view of this and of the receipt of mbassy Circuler Telegram "o. 5 of Canuary 18th,
handed the mayor an official letter in which reference was made to the orders from the .xecutive Yusn regarding the protection of British lives and property during the present crisis, and requested his assurance that such protection was being afforded in moy and that any assistance which might be considered necessary would be readily forthcominą: - This assurancɛ ne gave and he undertook to have the writing erased from the oflloc Lates. similar letter was sent to Governor Lâu Chien-hau at Foochow and British ubjecte in Amoy and Poochów, as well ne in the missionary centres of Ch'angohow and Ch'uenchow, vore notified of those steps.
